MAIN STREET IMPROVEMENTS

Several Main Street improvements will take place this summer. Funded by the City of Sarasota and the Downtown Improvement District, the improvements are being initiated to increase walkability and enhance business activity in the City’s urban commercial district. Utilizing New Urbanism principles, the improvements will include widening of sidewalks, new areas for public gathering, enhanced street lighting with new fixtures, and increased landscaping.

The enhancements are the result of more than two years of planning and public involvement. The concepts for the improvements were originally identified in the City’s “Downtown Master Plan 2020” in 2002, and were solidified to a high priority status during a City of Sarasota SemCon 2010-11 event held in March of 2011. The improvements are divided into three segments on Main Street.

Segment 1
Segment 1 includes the Main Street Corridor from the east side of Bayfront Drive intersection to the west side of the Five Points Roundabout. Improvements include:

  • Parallel parking on the north side of Main Street from Gulfstream Avenue to Five Points roundabout. Angled parking will be maintained on the south side of Main.
  • Enhanced landscaping with additional bulb-outs.
  • Replacement of pedestrian lighting with new poles from Gulfstream Avenue to the Five Points Roundabout.
  • Addition of brick paver sidewalks from Gulfstream Avenue to Five Points roundabout.
  • Brick paver crosswalks in select areas.
  • Milling and resurfacing of roadway only in areas affected by other proposed improvements.
  • Site furnishings such as bike racks, benches, and trash receptacles.
  •

    Segment 2
Segment 2 includes the Main Street Corridor from the east side of Five Points Roundabout to an area just west of the Orange Avenue intersection. Improvements include:

  • Adding three bulb-outs totaling 1158 square feet of additional sidewalk space.
  • Enhanced landscaping.
  • Rehabilitation of light poles including new bulbs and globes.
  •

    Segment 3
Segment 3 includes the Main Street Corridor from the east side of Orange Avenue to Goodrich Avenue. Improvements include:

  • Enhanced landscaping with additional and modified bulb-outs.
  • Replace Globes and bulbs on existing light poles.
  • Repair, replace and clean existing sidewalks as required.
  • Brick paver crosswalks.
  • Milling and resurfacing of roadway in areas affected by other proposed improvements.

  • Construction on the improvements that total approximately $1.8 million dollars will begin shortly after July 8, 2013.  Segment 2 work will be completed within 6 weeks of start date, and Segments 1 and 3 work will be substantially completed prior to November 5, 2013

In addition to the projects identified above, the City is also currently in design for a roundabout to be placed at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Main Street. The roundabout will provide increased efficiency and safety for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The design will be completed by August of 2013 with a projected construction scheduled for July 15, 2014.
